about Civil Service Reform at Government of the United Kingdom
Lots in the Sunday Times about this, with an emphasis on the Public Sector being paid 7% more than the Private sector on average. But this is what really struck home (although the measure of 'productivity' in the public sector is presumably pretty lame):
"public sector productivity fell by 3.4% in the 10 years from 1997 — compared with a rise of 28% in the private sector over the same period"
If this government - or the next - had any real guts it would follow the lead of the Irish and slash pay across the board (to start with)

Alex Massie on The Spectator blog adds his voice:
"Remember the outcry after the discovery that Paul Clarke could face five years in prison for the "crime" of finding a sawn-off shotgun in his garden and handing it in to his local police station? No, me neither. Well, blog-land has not been happy about this but, as a reader points out, our friends at newspapers and the BBC have completely ignored it"

Yes, and funnily enough the original article where I picked it up, in the stream below, has now switched off all comments "for legal reasons."
They have also taken away the mountain of the comments that were made, and all of them were critical of the Police, government, judiciary and legal system.

Perhaps the minions were getting a little too restive. Can't have that.

Does the fact that he also carried ammunition with the gun through the streets change anyone's opinion? over 2 years ago via web
