Keep our country Tidy

The first posting on this topic. Now there's a sad indictment!

Where to begin..... For many years I have been visiting the beautiful beaches around Aberdeen from Muchalls in the south to Forvie Sands in the north including Donmouth, Aberdeen City Beach, Cove, Greyhope Bay, Nigg Bay, Murcar, Balmedie & Newborough and collected many hundreds (if not thousands) of bin liners full of litter. It is at times a truly thankless and unending task. Why bother? - I find there is a real sense of achievement about spending 10-20 minutes turning a foul eyesore into a pristine and natural place of beauty. Every time I go back - either as an active member of the Marine Conservation Society Beachwatch/Adopt-a-Beach or on my lonesome there is always litter to be collected. But every time I leave there is nothing but restored beauty.

Rather than bemoan the bad habits of the many and the total disregard shown for our environment and the appalling state of many of our "beauty spots" I'd rather suggest what you could do to help. Every time you go out for a walk, whether as a family for a weekend stroll, on your own or walking the dog etc bring along a plastic shopping bag or a bin liner and stop and pick up the litter you see. I promise within a few trips you will start to see a huge improvement in your local environment. That simple!!

Start today! If you find there is no litter - I, or others I know who care, may have recently visited. The chances of this happening are sadly rather remote.

If this has touched a cord - I'd like to see your response. I might even share experiences of shaming businesses into cleaning up their premises, some of the "litter blackspots" and how to perhaps join others keen to make a difference. Good luck! about 2 years ago via web

Glad to see you've signed up and hope you manage to get more people on board to do something about this.

Take pictures of it in your neighbourhood. Get yourself a free Flickr account. Upload and comment. Send to your local councillors...regularly.
